Contractors should be fully aware if they are required to have professional indemnity insurance (PII) before starting a job, an expert has advised.
While many agencies will commonly make sure an employee is aware of PII if it has been stipulated in the contract, it can occasionally be overlooked.
Paul Thorpe, of contractor insurance firm Caunce O' Hara, points out that it is still up to the contractor to arrange such cover even if their attention has not been brought to it.
He acknowledged that the "onus" should be on the agency to flag such requirements up as part of an initial checklist, but strongly advised workers to examine their contract so as not to breach any terms.
Furthermore, contractors who knowingly decide to work, in hope that they will get away with it, may wish they had taken simple steps to arrange it.
"Perhaps the most convincing argument to make you rethink contracting without PII is that the cost is literally a fraction (£200 - £400) of the potential costs of a claim - potentially tens, or even hundreds, of thousands of pounds," Mr Thorpe said.
