Contractors should resist dishonest CVs

Contractors have been advised to resist lying on their CVs in an attempt to get ahead in today's competitive jobs market.

Given the recession's effect on the number of employment opportunities available, some contractors are prone to embellishing their CVs in order to improve their chances of securing a position.

However, Russell Dyer, of CV specialists Accendo Career Management, points out that it is a legal requirement to be honest on such a document.

The CV actually forms part of a contract, as a worker is hired on those terms, so deliberate inaccuracies effectively breach that contract.

Mr Dyer advised contractors to stay away from any untruths – no matter how inconsequential they may seem – as experienced recruiters will have little trouble spotting them, particularly in an interview situation.

"It is one thing to write extravagant claims on paper, but quite another to be fluent in untruths in front of an interview panel," he said.

"If you are found to be lying, even if it is only a small point, then the rest of your CV will be questioned, and you will be most likely back searching the job pages again."
