Fewer people are choosing to study information and communication technology (ICT) while at school, which is likely to have an effect on demand in the coming years.
According to recent figures, 17 per cent less people opted to study IT this year compared to 2009.
Consequently, it is thought that the industry could be heading for a skills shortage as a result of the reduction, which could in turn benefit today’s contract and freelance workers in the sector.
With fewer people acquiring specialist IT skills to take into the workplace, it has been claimed that contractors are likely to see an increase in employment opportunities.
Gerry McLaughlin, a spokesman for advice website ITContractor.com, said such a development could also drive up rates of pay within the industry.
"IT will prove to be a lucrative and much safer profession over the next five to ten years," he commented.
"The information age has arrived and those working in IT are in the vanguard of it."
Mr McLaughlin recently stated that companies are protecting their IT budgets, as the sector is now too important in the modern business world.
