HMRC pledges help for stranded contractors

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has said it will help any contractors who were affected by the recent volcano in Iceland.

Many workers were left stranded in other countries after the cloud of ash from the eruption caused mass cancellation of air travel for almost a week.

Consequently, a significant number of contractors were unable to properly manage their tax, National Insurance and VAT affairs.

However, HMRC has stressed that it is in a position to help sole traders and limited company contractors with such issues, provided they make contact as soon as possible.

"The sooner you get in touch, the sooner we'll be able to see how we can help. Don't wait until your payment is overdue," a spokesman for the department said.

Any contract workers who think they may have problems meeting their required payments have been advised to contact HMRC's Businesses Payment Support Service at the earliest opportunity.

Recent research conducted by the Professional Contractors Group revealed the majority of contract workers go freelance out of choice rather than necessity.

According to the findings, some 41 per cent of respondents chose to do so as a way of striking a good work/life balance.
