Workers choosing contracting as positive option

The majority of contractors go freelance out of choice rather than necessity, recent research has found.

According to a study conducted by the Professional Contractors Group (PCG), some 41 per cent of respondents chose to work freelance as a way of striking a good work/life balance.

Furthermore, just five per cent of those polled said they were working as a contractor as they were unable to find any other employment.

The Freelancer & Contractor Services Association (FCSA) points out that this is a positive result, as it refutes the long-held notion that a contractor is not as skilled as a worker with a permanent position.

The FCSA said it is keen to dispel the myth that a contract worker is essentially disposable, and is offered no security from their employer.

Pointing out that such assumptions are highly inaccurate, the group said it hopes the results of polls such as the one from PCG will illustrate the benefits of flexible working to employer, employee and the country as a whole.

The FCSA was formed in 2008 and consists of Giant, Brookson and Parasol, three of the largest companies in the contracting sector.
